Among the peoples of Thra Podlings might be thought of as least, given their humbleness and short stature. But the Podling must set aside his hopes of recruitment when he meets the Gelfling Deet, instead becoming companion and protector to the Grottan on the perilous quest that has brought her above ground. No better friend will Deet find in Hup, and she will come to need the brave Podling's help, for the burden of knowledge she bears and the dangerous path she must walk cannot be managed alone.
